Key Stage 3:
At Key Stage 3 pupils are taught on a roundabout system, this is currently in conjunction with the Art department. Modules last approximately seven weeks. They study from a range of CAD, Electronics, Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Textiles over the course of each academic year. At the end of each module pupils are assessed in line with the National Curriculum levels. Pupils develop a range of transferable skills that include the following:  
Creativity – pupils are taught to use their imagination to produce outcomes that are both original and which have value. They are taught how to generate ideas and develop and model these.
Problem solving – pupils are given opportunities to find problems and work out their own solutions.
Making skills- pupils develop their practical skills to aim to make high quality products.
Planning – pupils are taught how to plan activities to manage time and resources effectively.
Evaluation techniques – pupils are helped to evaluate their own work, and that of others, in ways which develop an appreciation of, and sensitivity to, a wide range of issues.
                            
Expected Range of Levels:
Year 7 – Levels 3 to 5
Year 8 – Levels 4 to 6
Year 9 – Levels 5 to 7
 
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 the Design and Technology Department offer an exciting range of opportunities: Food, Graphics, Resistant Materials and Textiles are all offered as full courses at GCSE level and follow the OCR syllabus. Hospitality and Catering is a new course offering an alternative to the GCSE route.
Please note that as of September 2009 all GCSE’s courses are changing, please check back for updated information!
 
Qualifications sat at Key Stage 4
All GCSE courses are 60% coursework with two examinations sat in the summer.  The Hospitality and Catering is assessed through ongoing collation of evidence with no terminal examination.
 
Key Stage 5:
At Key Stage 5 the Design department offers two key courses:
Design and Technology: Product Design, students can study this course with a background in any of the Design subjects. This is an exciting course with opportunities for students to further develop their designing skills whilst building an understanding of design concepts and theory application.
Art and Design: Textiles, students can study this course if they have completed a GCSE in Textiles. This is a practical based course that offers students a diverse range of opportunities to develop their knowledge and skills within the field of Textiles and Art.
 
Qualifications sat at Key Stage 5:
Product Design: Case Study (Coursework): 60% and Innovation Challenge (Examination) in May/June.
Art: Textiles: Portfolio of Evidence and Practical Exam May/June.
 
Revision sessions:
Revision and coursework sessions are regularly offered within the Department particularly in the build up to Easter. Please check back regularly for further information.
 
Enrichment Activities:
The Department offers a wide range of enriching opportunities these currently include after school an after school Textiles club and a Graphics Gifted and Talented group.
