Key Stage 3
In Years 7 and 8 each student is tested on three different areas of dance:
Performance, Choreography and Appreciation
Posture, alignment, focus, musicality, coordination, extension, timing, accuracy, precision
Creativity, originality, range of movement, use of space, use of directions, use of levels
Understanding, observation, knowledge, evaluation of others and self
In Dance students will learn and develop these 3 areas though a range of different dance styles, using costumes, props and key subject specific terminology. Dance at Hatton is more than physical activity, students will learn a wide range of skills and responsibilities to transfer in to other subjects and lifelong learning:
- Motivation and discipline
- Communication and interpersonal skills
- Physical fitness, stamina and perseverance
- Confidence and self-belief
- Organisation and planning
- To become an independent learner
Key Stage 4
BTEC Dance is split into 3 sections
Component 1: Exploring the Performing Arts
In this component dancers develop an understanding of performing arts dance by examining practitioners’ work and the processes used to create a dance performance. In completing this component, dancers have the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of the different styles of dance, how dance company’s work in the working world as well as type of roles and responsibilities within the dance industry.
Dancers will have the chance to work in their own, in small groups and as a whole class to create your own company looking at the role of the choreographer, dancers and costume designer.
In this component dancers study and analyse a wide range of dance styles ranging from Matthew Bourn’s Swan Lake to Andrew Winghart’s Kaaris Charge.
Component 2: Developing Skills and Techniques in the Performing Arts
In this component dancers will develop performance skills and techniques through the reproduction of dance repertoire as performer or designer.
They will also participate in workshops and classes to develop performance and or design, and interpretative skills and techniques appropriate to dance for example jazz dance and contemporary with reference to existing repertoire.
Dancers will learn how to apply the skills and techniques during the rehearsal and development process to support their development within dance. Also with in this component dancers will learn how to track progress, reflecting on your development of skills and working practices in workshops, through a range of rehearsals and performances.
Component 3: Responding to a Brief
In this component, dancers will respond to a brief set by the exam board. Dancers will be given a brief that outlines the set requirements to consider regarding target audience and stimulus. Working as part of a group, dancers will develop their ideas for a workshop performance and apply their skills and techniques to communicate creative intentions to an audience.
