Key Stage 3 Curriculum Details:

Music within Key Stage 3 covers a variety of topics and skill sets to prepare pupils to develop their knowledge and understanding of the musical world around them. From notation reading and composition skills, through World Music and Popular Song, the Key Stage 3 scheme enables all students to be fully involved and engaged in music making

Using assessments in composition, performance and listening and understanding, students are able to express their emotions, beliefs and knowledge of their world. All students are encouraged to perform, either as an individual or part of a class ensemble, and feedback and guidance is provided through peer and teacher feedback within their lessons to enable them to attain their full potential.

When students join the Academy they are encouraged to learn to play an instrument, and are provided the opportunity to undertake tuition on one, or more, of the instruments taught by our team of visiting instrumental teachers. Once confident on their chosen instrument, students are then encouraged to join in with the Academy's extra-curricular music activities. These include the String Group, Orchestra, Wind Group, Wind Band, Brass Ensembles, Hatton Singers, and Jazz Group. Those students interested in the technical aspects of music are encouraged to join the DJ club, Theatre Tech group, Keyboard Club and the Music Tech Sequencing group. Other extra-curricular opportunities are available throughout the academic year, including the annual whole school musical production, Christmas Carol Choir, Spring Recital, Summer Arts Festival and lunchtime recital concerts. Our Ambassadors for Music are engaged in music activities across the academy, and work to support learners within our primary schools.

Key Stage 4 Curriculum Details:

At Key Stage 4, students can develop their musical skills and understanding through either the GCSE Music qualification, or through the alternative BTEC Level 1-2 Award in Music, or the V.Cert Level 2 Technical Award in Music Technology . Whichever course students opt fo,r the courses enable them to progress musically, but the content of each is very different.    

The Edexcel GCSE Music course requires students to demonstrate competencies in performing, composing, and the listening to, and analysis of, music from a variety of traditions. Students are expected to perform as both a solo musician and as part of an ensemble, and should be able to perform at a standard equivalent to the ABRSM Grade 4 examination level on their chosen instrument, or voice. They will be required to compose two original pieces of music, within which they will be required to demonstrate a sound understanding of the genre within which they compose, and the technical requirements of the style and instrumentation used. A 90 minute listening examination in the June of the final year enables students to demonstrate their understanding of the genres and styles studied, including the eight Set Works, and requires students to answer questions about a number of pieces of music, which will be played during the examination.

Both the Edexcel Level 1-2 BTEC Award in Music and the V.Cert Level 2 in Music Technology are vocational qualifications within which students are able to learn about, and demonstrate competencies in, a variety of areas in the music industry; from live sound and lighting, to multi-track recording and event management. Key skills are taught through a series of workshops and lessons, with students demonstrating their skills and understanding through “real life” scenarios. From career development and training possibilities  to practical skills students develop as musicians within the professional industries.  The courses available are chosen with the cohort in mind, ensuring an appropriate pathway of study is available to all students as they progress through the school.

Key Stage 5 Curriculum Details:

Within the Sixth Form, students are given the opportunity to develop the music experiences through the Edexcel Level 3 BTEC in Music Technology – Sound Engineering. These modular courses enable students to develop advanced skills in a more refined manner than the Level 2 qualification, with more depth of knowledge and evidence of skills require within each unit.    

The Level 3 Sound Engineering qualification requires students to complete five units of work; two mandatory units and three optional units. The mandatory units of Studio Recording Techniques and DAW Production (Digital Audio Workstation) will be augmented with optional units on Live Sound, Mixing and Mastering Techniques, Studio Design and Acoustics and Working and Developing as a Production Team

The Level 3 BTEC Music course enables students to develop the skills needed to enter the music industry with experiences and knowledge vital for the modern age of music.
