Literacy

Introduction

Our Academy values the importance of reading and the positive impact it has on young people’s lives. UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation) states ‘the “multiplier effect” of literacy empowers people, enables them to participate fully in society and contributes to improve livelihoods’. Our Academy embraces these principles through developing core reading skills which will be built upon across the curriculum. 

All students at the Academy will have an enriched experience of reading across the curriculum. Reading material is carefully planned into schemes of learning to ensure all students can access the resources through a range of activities which develop comprehension and vocabulary. The academy will ensure that all students, regardless of background, ability, and needs, will make sufficient progress through prioritising reading intervention from the beginning of Year 7. As well as developing the reading skills necessary to succeed academically, students will be immersed in opportunities to read for pleasure. 

Intent 
  • Increase fluency, engagement, and enjoyment of reading. 

  • Improve reading comprehension. 

  • Build character amongst our students. 

  • Embrace diversity through empathising with characters. 

  • Support the wellbeing of our students through a shared reading journey. 

  • Close the vocabulary gap between students of all backgrounds. 

  • Empower our staff to be reading role models.

Oracy and Debate

Meet our Oracy Advocates

Our Oracy Advocates run a lunchtime Debate Club in W12 with Miss Randall every Wednesday lunchtime. All Year 7&8 students are welcome. Our advocates will offer support and encouragement to all abilities.

Students have the opportunity to debate at numerous points throughout the year. The English Speaking Union’s School Mace national competition runs annually and students are encouraged to take part. As well as this, students are encouraged to debate through the inter-house Balloon Debate competition, where they can win points for their house.

 

 

        

 

Library Access

At the Academy we are passionate about ensuring all students have a well-resourced and easily accessibly library to support their academic success.

All students can access both our library onsite and our online library.
