Hatton Baccalaureate (HBacc)

HATTON BACCALAUREATE- THE SCHOLARS PROGRAMME

At Sir Christopher Hatton we believe that having good character is essential in the pursuit of excellence. The Scholars Programme of the Hatton Baccalaureate (HBacc) has been designed to help you learn all about character and challenge and inspire you, through a multitude of exciting activities and opportunities, to develop your character education alongside your academic learning.

In Year 7 you will learn about what character is, by exploring the 15 Hatton Character Qualities that will help you flourish in society. In Year 8 you will explore these character qualities in action looking at noteworthy people and how their character impacted their achievements and legacy. In Year 9 you will see how these character qualities are essential in the world of work.

Within your HBacc Scholars Programme Record of Achievement booklet, you will be able to record a wide variety of activities that count towards our five core values of: Excellence, Aspiration, Achievement, Inspiration and Community. Each core value is awarded at four different levels: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum, reflecting the effort level you have given.

You must get your activities signed by your form tutor to earn your HBacc Scholars badges which are awarded at our celebration assemblies throughout the year. These count towards your final grade which you will receive at the HBacc Graduation Ceremony at the end of the HBacc Scholars Programme.

Further Information regarding our character education and Hatton character qualities can be viewed here.

The HBacc Graduate Programme (Year 10)

After completing the HBacc Scholars Programme in Years 7–9, students move into the Year 10 Graduate Programme. This next stage of the HBacc pathway helps our young people deepen their character education, develop leadership skills, contribute positively to the academy community and begin preparing for life beyond school.

At Sir Christopher Hatton Academy, we believe that character is essential in the pursuit of excellence. The Graduate Programme gives students meaningful opportunities to demonstrate the 15 Hatton Character Qualities across our five academy values: Excellence, Aspiration, Achievement, Inspiration and Community.

This programme encourages students to step forward as role models, to take part in young leadership opportunities, and to engage deeply with real-world issues as they prepare for their next steps in school, further education, apprenticeships and employment.

How the Graduate Programme Works

1. Form Time Character Curriculum

Every two weeks, Year 10 students focus on one Hatton Character Quality.
This includes:

  • Watching and reflecting on a carefully selected TED Talk linked to a specific character quality
  • Discussing real-life moral dilemmas that connect character to decision-making
  • Taking part in debates, discussions and reflections to build confidence and verbal communication skills
  • Exploring how character qualities apply to personal development, relationships, behaviour and the wider world

This structured curriculum ensures every student continues to develop the knowledge and virtues introduced in Years 7–9.

2. Graduate Programme Activities

Throughout the year, students complete a series of meaningful opportunities linked to the 15 Hatton Character Qualities.
These activities may include:

  • Supporting school events
  • Contributing to tutor time
  • Demonstrating leadership within lessons
  • Helping with extracurricular and community projects
  • Showing resilience, responsibility, teamwork and creativity
  • Participating in trips, enrichment, careers activities and whole-school initiatives

All activities are recorded in the Year 10 Graduate Programme booklet, which acts as a personal portfolio of character development.

3. Character Trailblazer Project (Term 6)

In the summer term, students research and present the story of a “Character Trailblazer” — someone whose virtues, decisions and actions have made a significant impact on society.

Students:

  • Research their chosen individual
  • Explore which Hatton Character Qualities they demonstrated
  • Reflect on the world context around their achievements
  • Produce a written or presentation-based project
  • Consider how these qualities can influence their own character development

This project helps students reflect on who they are now and who they aspire to become.

Celebration and Recognition

At the end of the year, students reflect on their personal growth and character progress.
Completion of the Graduate Programme is recognised as a significant achievement and celebrated as part of our HBacc pathway from Year 7–10.

This recognition supports future applications to:

  • Sixth Form
  • College
  • Apprenticeships
  • Work experience programmes
  • Employment opportunities

Sixth Form – The Alumni Programme: Future Readiness and Independence

In Sixth Form, students follow the Alumni Programme, designed to prepare them for life after school. Form time includes UCAS and apprenticeship support, personal development, wellbeing check-ins and time for independent study. Students take part in two university visits, a structured enrichment programme, voluntary work and in-person work experience.

Life skills, financial literacy, personal safety and independent living are woven throughout the programme, ensuring students leave Hatton ready to thrive in higher education, employment or training.
