Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural Development

At Sir Christopher Hatton Academy, we are committed to supporting the spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development of every student. This is a key part of our wider personal development programme, which prepares students for life beyond school.

Our approach is rooted in our Hatton Character Qualities and is brought to life through our curriculum, tutor programme, assemblies, enrichment opportunities, student leadership and careers education. Together, these experiences help students grow into confident, responsible and aspirational young people.

Our Vision

We want every student to leave Hatton not only with strong qualifications, but with the character, confidence and understanding, in order to flourish in modern Britain and the wider world.

Through our personal development programme, students:

  • Develop a strong sense of identity and belonging
  • Learn to make informed and responsible decisions about their future pathways
  • Contribute positively to society

Spiritual Development

We support students to explore who they are, what they believe and how they understand the world around them. Through activities such as Thought of the Week, assemblies and our wider ethos programme, students are encouraged to reflect on important questions, consider different viewpoints and develop confidence in expressing their ideas. Students develop into thoughtful, reflective individuals who respect the beliefs and perspectives of others.

Moral Development

We help students understand right and wrong, make good decisions and take responsibility for their actions. Through our Hatton Character Qualities, Lifeskills and Citizenship curriculum and tutor programme, students explore real-life issues such as equality, relationships and personal responsibility. Students are also given opportunities to apply these values through leadership and service, particularly through the Charities Board within the Flourishing Leaders programme, as well as whole-school and house-based charitable events.

Students develop a strong sense of fairness, integrity and respect, and understand the importance of British Values such as the rule of law and individual liberty.

Social Development

We provide a wide range of opportunities for students to work with others, build relationships and contribute to the school community. Our house system plays a central role, bringing students together across year groups through competitions and events. Enrichment activities such as Duke of Edinburgh, debating and community projects help students build confidence, resilience and teamwork skills. Through our Flourishing Leaders programme and Ethos Weeks, students take on leadership roles and engage with real-world experiences.

Students become confident communicators who work well with others and contribute positively to school and society.

Cultural Development

We help students develop an understanding of and respect for the diverse world in which they live. Through our curriculum, assemblies and student leadership opportunities, students explore different cultures, beliefs and perspectives. Our Diversity Board and enrichment programme promote inclusion, respect and participation. Educational visits and community engagement help students broaden their experiences and develop empathy.

Students learn to value diversity, challenge discrimination and prepare for life in modern Britain.
